I'm not sure if Dan Carr is over on these forums yet but i know from reading his blog that he's made the change from the 2.8 to the f4 IS.
He's written two small posts about it:

dancarrphotography.com/blog/2009/03/19/o...smaller-and-lighter/

and follow up

I don't have IS on my 70-200 2.8. Never missed it. You are probably shooting at high enough shutter speeds to not need it. The 2.8, however, is nice to have.

If you can afford IS, go for it. If not, at least go for the 2.8.

My 2c...

Where will you be using it?
I probably use my 70-200 for 70% of my ski/snowboard shots, and it's a hassle to carry around more weight than needed.
I got the f/4L IS version, and it both weighs and costs 50% of the f/2.8 IS here in Norway.

Don't really need the IS, but the IS is abit more weathersealed than the non-IS one, that goes for the f/4 version atleast, don't know the f/2.8

Read up on Dan's posts in his blog.
You got to decide if you will be needing the f/2.8.
The DOF is great on a non-crop sensor, but I rarely shoot mine at f/4 anyway

Cheers guys Dans blog was a big help

After all your comments and reading Dans experience im gonna go with the f4 IS
Size comes into play since i want something i can carry with me on the hill and travel with
I already have the 85mm 1.8 so if i need low DOF for portraits etc i can just use that and my feet

i can vouch that you will be happier with the f4L IS.

i used to have the 2.8L IS and it was decently heavier than the 4L IS , and i've read and heard the f4 is even sharper than the 2.8

i made the same switch a while back that dan carr made after having shot with my 2.8 for 6 months every single day, and i don't regret the switch at all

Thread revival!!!!!!

For those who picked up (or switched over to) the f4 version, got a few questions for ya. Being a year later.....are you still happy with the decision to go the F4 route, or have you switched over (or plan on switching) to the f2.8 IS II that came out earlier this year?`Haven't seen a comparison of the f2.8 II and the f4, but all the tests I've seen of it against the older model, it looks like they did a good job on improving on the 2.8's optics.

Nice. Enjoy the new toy! I've been combing Craigslist for a used tripod collar but no luck. I'll probably just bite the bullet and hit up B&H soon.
