first, I know, I should be using lightroom instead, which I am also...

but,
Aperture makes a file called "Aperture Library" in addition to all the folders it organizes your photos in. Is it sufficient to just copy that file to effectively back up the entire library? In the event of a crash and loss of everything, can you then just import the file back into aperture again to restore your photos?

I'd test it myself but it's a few gigs big and that'd take more time than typing this and tapping your brains..

Aperture has a backup system included. It is called the Aperture Vault. Set up your vault on an external or alternative drive. After you import new shots click on update vault and any changes will be updated.
