Good (&cheap) point and shoot cameras? 2 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 14
I'm looking to pick something up to carry around with me and snap some photos. Ideally I'd like something that's hot-shoe compatible, and really small. The canon G9 etc is too big.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

Nikon Coolpix P6000 has a hotshoe.
I think it's a tad smaller than the Canon G-series. But I've never compared them to eachother.
The features are pretty much the same as on the G10 aswell. The G10 looks kind of funny with a 580EX II attatched to it ;-P

I've been having a look at this one:

www.dpreview.com/news/0807/08072102panasoniclx3.asp

seems it can sync faster than 1/250th, and it looks pretty small.

definitely go with the lx3.

i got one for my drive across aus from perth to sydney (4000km's it was long!) as all my kit was getting shipped over with my furniture etc.

manual controls are great on a compact, it has limited zoom, but a really wide lens and f2 is excellent as well as raw.

quality is great upto iso 800 then you can really notice a significant drop.

it's a little bit too big to fit in your pants pocket as the lens sticks out a bit, but should fit in a jacket pretty well.

haven't used an external flash with it tho.

the price has dropped somewhat here with all the sales on at the mo

and there are extra bits and pieces for it if you're into pimping out a compact haha

Hey Brian,

I've been using an LX3 for the past 6 months or so and I have to say I've been really happy with it. The build on it is great - i've dropped it a couple times by accident with no issues. It's a lot smaller than the G9/10 and simple to use as well. It shoots raw and with the new lightroom/acr update you can now save manageable dng files (they used to be 3x the normal raw size!)

I've also used it in the rain and snow with no issues.

Attached is a sample image - don't judge the photo! Hope this helps!

Damn! That LX3 looks like a perfect compact!
Solves the problem of holiday photography...
Who wants to take all your gear away on holiday?

I'm keen on trying one out. It would be interesting to hook up the radio slaves and see what it can do in the field too.
