So I am very strapped for cash at the moment and I got to thinking why couldnt i use some of my older strobes that do not have manual controls.

Obviously they wouldn't work as a main light source but as fill or rim.

I experimented with using one as a rim with my two regular strobes but I found that it added blur to the subject.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever tried anything like this and what results they yielded?

your prob a poor flash's duration. its too long, and won't work for action. if you keep it in the bag to light things which aren't the subject it still can be useful

I understand that the durations are too long. I am asking if anyone has ever had any luck ( or even tried) with using them for fill or rim. Rim i think might be out of the question but as fill away from the subject i think it might work.

The only reason I ask is because an excellent shooter I know recomended I give it a go.The results were (as I expected) motion blur.
I was just putting it up for discussion if anyone had any creative ideas? What about with a gobo? If I could keep the light off the skater?

do you think there is potential or is it a definate no?
