In general, without a meter.

How do you calculate f/stop when more than one flash is pointed from the same spot?

Say 1 flash at full power means shoot at f/4. Would 2 flashes mean shoot at f/8 (because double the power) and 3 means shoot at f/16?

It gets a bit confusing for me.

well i use a flash meter, and meter both at the same time.

But in your case if you don't have one. If you set up flash 1 to be F8 and flash 2 to be F8. Then combined they have double the light, which is 1 more stop. So you'll end up with F11. Where it gets confusing is when adding different powered flashes.

such as:
flash 1: F8
flash 2: F5.6
that's 1 full power + 1/2 power = F8 + 1/2 stop = F9.5

if you had:
Flash 1: F8
Flash 2: F4
That's 1 full power + 1/4 power = F8 + 1/4 stop = F8.6 or F8.9 (basically still F8)

The Fstop table here is helpful:

Hi,

Great site.

Quick couple of questions.

I struggle to get full 1/250th sync with multiple flashes, at best 1/160th but usually 1/125th. I believe this is because my flashes are triggered as master and slave.
i.e. one master off-camera flash which then triggers another slave via infra red. I assume you use pocketwizards/triggers on all off your off-camera flashes then that way there is no
delay and you can reach full 1/250th?

I've decided to switch to Elinchrom Skyport system as I can get 4 or 5 triggers/receivers for price of 2 pocketwizards to help with the problem above.
Do you have experience of the Skyport triggers?

Can you recommend a cheap light meter? I've never used one and just trusted my camera screen but now I'd like to nail things consistently. Are there any advantages to more
expensive light meters?

Thanks!
