The site uses  a subscription for a couple of reasons, the first is to keep members who join serious.  The secondary reasons include: hosting, maintenance, and content fees.  A lot of time and effort has been put into building and maintaining the website.  You're of course free to look around without signing up, but signing up will entitle you to extra goodies.
